What to expect in clinic

The aim of a clinic review is to prevent your diabetes causing future health problems, such as damage to the eyes, kidneys feet and heart.

To do this the doctor will ask you about you diabetes and other medical conditions. The doctor will need to review your blood glucose control and current medication.

The nurse in clinic will measure your weight, height, blood pressure and blood glucose. A sample of urine will be taken to check for early kidney damage.

You will have been asked to have a blood test two weeks prior to your appointment; the results of these will be discussed with you. These will include your long-term diabetes test known as HbA1c. This enables the doctor to assess your blood glucose control over a period of three months and adjust your treatment accordingly. The fat levels known as lipids or cholesterol which may also be tested as control of these, along with control of your blood glucose level and blood pressure are important in keeping people with diabetes healthy.
